Have you ever had an emotional response to music listening or participation? Maybe you’ve experienced both positive and negative emotions when engaging in a musical experience. The biological responses we have to music occur because music can stimulate both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously. It is because of this that, when implemented by a trained professional, music can be used as therapy. Music Therapy is an established healthcare profession where a board-certified music therapist uses music to improve functioning in areas such as: cognition, communication, motor skills, social skills, and mental and emotional health.
As part of our holistic approach to wellness at WT Senior Living, we are proud to provide Music Therapy services at no cost to our residents. With no prior musical experience required, residents can expect to participate in singing, movement, instrument play, and/or song-writing when engaging in Music Therapy.
For Older Adults, Music Therapy can:
• Promote wellness
• Manage stress
• Reduce pain
• Support emotional expression
• Enhance memory
• Improve communication
• Increase mobility and coordination
• Increase self-esteem
• Increase socialization
In addition to Music Therapy, residents benefit from a robust music program and have the opportunity to participate in general music activities including:
• A resident choir
• Music Appreciation classes
• Piano lecture performances
• Annual talent show
• Summer Concert Series with local professional musicians
